Bedrooms have a wealth of unseen value. Much of it is accrued while you sleep soundly knowing that the room you spend such an abundance of time in is decorated with furniture that fits your personality and needs.
Yes, apartment living can be rough. But it can be much tougher when a poorly chosen California King bed brushes up against each wall of your cramped bedroom. Large rooms pose their own unique problems, too, and create the opposite dilemma. Design challenges within large rooms usually consist of finding pragmatic ways to fill the sprawling spaces without creating a sense of cluttering or unnecessary design elements. A misused space can happen to anyone. This Bedroom Furniture Buyer’s Guide was created to prevent our customers from undeservedly hating their bedrooms.
Let’s brush up on the basics of bedroom furniture. The inventory list for any bedroom includes a number of must-haves, optional items and luxury items that should be dictated by preference and space constraints. Most people are familiar with the essentials: the bed frames, mattresses and nightstands of the world, if you will. What about the optional items and the luxuries? These usually come in the form of items such as mirrors, rugs or plush arm chairs that are perfect for curling up and reading a page-turner.
Beds
Of the essentials, most people would agree that the bed frame and mattress are the most critical. They act as a centerpiece for the space and set the tone for the rest of the room. Consequently, the bed and bed frame should speak to your personal style – this is no place to showcase contrasting styles, if you’re hoping to achieve a cohesive look within your decor.
Our sizeable
collection of beds caters to every style, from the traditionalist to the minimalist. Whether you expect your bed to be replete with ornate engravings or be an unadorned modern masterpiece, we have something that will work within your design goals. Our beds are available in twin sizes all the way up to the California King. Because we stock a diverse range of styles, we are able to offer something for every conceivable application. Be sure to measure your space before purchasing your bed – a mattress or frame that is too large for the space can actually make it appear smaller. The dimensions of each size of bed are:
When placing your bed in the room, allow enough cushion between the edges and other objects so you can comfortably move around the bed to exit and enter, as well as replace bed linens. Typically, you need about 3 feet between a chest of drawers and any side of your bed. For the side of the bed which you enter and exit, allow 2 – 3 feet. For any other side (with the exception of the headboard), allow 1 – 2 feet so you can easily make the bed.
Nightstands
Looking beyond the bed, there is one key piece of furniture that typically abuts the coil-filled centerpiece. Nightstands, a bedroom mainstay, are integral to the appearance and aesthetic of every bedroom. From a functionality and appearance standpoint, nightstands that aren’t properly matched with a bed and the room at-large can:
fit poorly within the space due to their size – don’t forget to measure!
be too tall or short for an optimal reach from the bed – ideally, it should be the same height.
differ in appearance from the rest of the room
And just be a general eyesore.
Like our beds, the nightstands we offer are available in a multitude of styles, colors, prices and sizes. Buying your nightstands and bed separately can make sense if you’re looking to save money or want a more customizable look. You can browse our

Dressers, Chests and Bureaus
The workhorse of any bedroom is often the dresser. Although they get the least of the acclaim, they’re typically responsible for carrying much of the load (once it comes back from the laundry, that is). And a dresser’s functionality isn’t limited to its ability to house your clothing, either. It, too, is a vital part of the appearance of any room. Disregarding this while you’re designing your bedroom can lead to a mismatched look. The
dressers offered by AFA Stores come in enough varieties to fit into any room and still maintain visual harmony. We have sleek options with straight lines to suit modern tastes, as well as detailed pieces with a surplus of character for more traditional tastes. Again, be sure to allow about 3’ of relief between the front of your dresser or chest and other furniture so you can access all your stored clothes.
Finishing Touches
Decorations can be viewed as the icing on the cake. To create a well-designed room, you must start with a strong foundation and then put the right finishing touches on it. This is where decorations should come into play. Too many accent pieces can make a room feel chaotic and poorly planned. When you don’t decorate enough, a room can feel too bare and cold. Finding that perfect balance within your decorating should be the overarching goal of any competent interior design plan. Fortunately, we have an extensive inventory of
rugs,
arm chairs and
clocks to make it easy to ice your cake.
